Hello everyone,
When I started "A Yank on the Footy" in 2019, I started the podcast, not unlike many people who start a podcast, I wasn't exactly sure what the podcast would become. Sure, I hoped that the podcast would take the footy world "by storm", and become an overnight success.
Few things do.
Including this podcast.
But, as the old adage says, ‘slow and steady wins the race.’ Of course I am not winning the race, nor am I ever going to win the footy podcast race.
But I am thrilled to have carved out my small niche in footy podcasting.
Do I still hope to ‘hit it big? Of course I do. Who in their right mind wouldn’t? π (Thanks Carlton!)
But that being said, I am so thankful to all of you who’ve been part of this journey thus far.
At the start of 2023, I had a goal for the podcast. Being a small, independent show, my numbers are not huge; but they have been rather steady. I thought Thet goal would be achievable by the end of the calendar. What was that goal you ask? Reaching 50,000 downloads of the show. It was a lofty goal, or so I thought. All I had to do was average my roughly 1000 downloads each month.
Unfortunately, I did not meet that goal. π Nope, I cleared that hurdle in street shoes, achieving my goal before the end of June, six months ahead of schedule.
From Rick Shaibani and Frode Jurnhart who’ve been there since the outset to mates like Orville Gibson, Bevan Jones, Kym Harrison (MykAussie) Michael Gallus and Craig Smithers (to name but a few) who’ve been great to to talk with about all sorts of things, sometimes footy, often not. There are so many others than I can name here.
I have been amazed by the guests that I have been able to have on the podcast. While I am still probably the most proud of my first BIG interview, with Ricky Nixon, I have found myself almost wanting to pinch myself when I reflect on some of the people I have spoken with…
From the magnanimity and kindness of Kate Roffey and Barry Cheatley to the sobering honesty of Shaun Smith, and inspiring stories like that if Damien Buttigieg, I can truly say that I have enjoyed each of my discussions. Do I hope to speak to even more ‘big names’ in the game of footy? Absolutely!
But I also love hearing and sharing the stories of every day supporters. This footy season, however, especially over the last month, I have not been able to do as many interviews as I would like, due to my quirky schedule at my summer job. I am setting aside the proceeds of that job to help cover a part of the cost of a trip to Australia next year. My goal is to get to games at GMBHA, Marvel and the MCG. I am also hoping to drive across to Adelaide, and catch a game at the AO as well.
Along with doing all of this, I am planning on visiting with as many local footy clubs as possible, hopefully including clubs that I have had members as guests on the podcast.
I am so looking forward to visiting these clubs, so I can see first-hand how these clubs amongst the most important components of their communities.
So, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that have been a part of this journey. It is so very much appreciated! (Also….if you have an idea for a guest, please don’t hesitate to share that information with me. π) Also, if you want to help support the podcast, you can do that by clicking on the yellow ‘buy me a coffee’ button, or check out my Redbubble store page on the top of my website!
Onward…and hopefully upward!
Again, thanks so much!
Next milestone coming up…
I am approaching my 350th episode in the coming months!
